Even though Jack and Meg White have gone their separate ways, the documentary Under Great White Northern Lights leaves us with a look back at the good old days of The White Stripes. Directed by Emmett Malloy, the film follows the band on their expansive 2007 tour across Canada. It’s a perfect combination of performance footage from the tour, off the cuff “secret shows,” and scenes depicting the culture of the Canadian landscape. There are some truly great moments, such as the band’s performance at a bowling alley in Saskatoon, a visit to a youth center in Edmonton, and, of course, their infamous one-note show in Newfoundland.

Under Great White Northern Lights debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2009 and held its U.S. premiere at 2010′s SXSW Festival. That’s where I saw the film and it was one of the highlights of the week. The ending scene alone made the film worth watching…

In addition to the release of the DVD/Blu-ray of the documentary, the band released a companion live album. Their first ever live album, it’s a compilation from performances along the tour and includes all of The White Stripes’ staples such as “Icky Thump,” “Seven Nation Army,” “We Are Going To Be Friends” and many more. Head to The White Stripes site to purchase Under Great White Northern Lights, including a special edition box set.
